Max Verstappen’s recent pole position at the 2026 Malaysian Grand Prix marked a significant moment for Red Bull Racing, reflecting notable progress after earlier challenges with car degradation. Less than a month before the Sepang qualifying session, Verstappen had described the Red Bull car as a "paper car," highlighting its vulnerability to component wear during races. Despite these ongoing issues, the team has managed to improve pace considerably since Monza.

Verstappen’s performance at Sepang was a clear step forward, securing his first pole position of the season and positioning Red Bull as the outright benchmark at the event. The driver credited the Baku upgrade package for enhancing the RB22’s drivability and balance, making the car easier to handle and more predictable compared to earlier in the year. These improvements have helped Verstappen maintain a consistent presence on the podium since his crash at Zandvoort.

While the Baku upgrade has contributed to better performance, Verstappen acknowledged that some degradation problems remain unresolved and are unlikely to be fully addressed within the 2026 season. He also noted that Mercedes appeared to be having an "off-weekend" in the challenging Malaysian heat, though he still considers them the benchmark overall in the championship.

Despite the gains in qualifying, Verstappen emphasized that pole position does not alleviate his ongoing frustrations with the current regulations and energy management constraints. The high degradation conditions at Sepang remain a challenge, but he expressed confidence in his race pace and tyre management capabilities. The Baku upgrade package is reported to be the final major update for Red Bull this year, with remaining issues expected to be tackled in the next season.

The improvements seen in Malaysia underline Red Bull’s efforts to adapt and refine their car’s balance and handling characteristics amid a demanding technical landscape. Verstappen’s comments suggest that while progress has been made, the team remains cautious about fully overcoming the degradation challenges that have affected their competitiveness earlier in the season.

Overall, the qualifying session at Sepang highlighted a positive development phase for Red Bull Racing and Verstappen, driven in part by the Baku upgrade. However, the team’s work is far from complete, and the ongoing competition with Mercedes continues to shape the dynamics of the 2026 Formula 1® season.
