Russell, who started the year as the pre-season favourite, currently trails his teammate Kimi Antonelli by 81 points with nine races left in the campaign.
Russell’s teammate Antonelli, in just his second season with Mercedes, has taken a commanding lead in the championship. The 20-year-old has won eight races so far and is on course to become the youngest ever Formula 1® world champion. Meanwhile, Russell has acknowledged that he is not currently in contention for the title this season.
