George Russell delivered a commanding pole-to-victory performance at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, marking his third win of the season. Starting from pole position, Russell managed to fend off a close challenge from Max Verstappen, securing a crucial victory that narrowed the championship gap to his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli.

Russell’s win in Baku reduced the deficit to Antonelli from 81 to 66 points. Despite a difficult qualifying session caused by a Q1 accident that left him starting 16th, Antonelli recovered impressively to finish fifth. The race also featured a Safety Car restart and a yellow flag period following Valtteri Bottas’ crash, during which Russell experienced a temporary loss of turbo power but maintained his lead.

The weekend was described by Russell as “incredible” from start to finish. He topped Thursday practice, secured a dominant pole position, and converted it into victory. Reflecting on his performance, Russell said he feels “more himself again” after adapting to a new driving style and credited his team’s support during a challenging mid-season phase. His previous win before Baku was in Austria back in June 2026.

Russell’s ambition for the remainder of the season is clear: to win every race and close the gap to Antonelli. The race in Azerbaijan underlined his determination and ability to handle pressure, especially when dealing with technical challenges like the temporary turbo power loss late in the event.

Max Verstappen, representing Red Bull Racing, pushed hard throughout the race but ultimately finished just behind Russell. Meanwhile, Antonelli’s recovery from a difficult start demonstrated resilience, though the points gap between the two Mercedes drivers remains significant.

This result highlights the ongoing intra-team dynamics at Mercedes, with Russell showing renewed confidence and pace. His comments suggest that the experience gained with his new driving approach is helping him regain form after a tougher period earlier in the season.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix outcome adds an important chapter to the season, with Russell closing in on Antonelli but still facing a substantial points deficit. The race also showcased the challenges of street circuits, including incidents like Bottas’ crash that influenced race conditions.

Russell’s reflections on the weekend emphasize the value of team support and personal adaptation in maintaining competitiveness. His goal to win every remaining race sets a clear target, though the championship standings still favour Antonelli at this stage.
