Mercedes driver George Russell is set to face a substantial grid penalty at the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix following an engine change prompted by a power unit failure in the previous race. This penalty is expected to affect his starting position for the main race but will not apply to the Sprint event held earlier in the weekend.
The decision comes after Russell experienced a power unit failure late in the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix, which contributed to his third non-scoring round of the season. This setback has widened the gap in the championship standings, with his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli extending his lead to 84 points. Due to damage sustained in Malaysia, Mercedes has accelerated the introduction of an engine upgrade initially planned under the FIA’s ADUO programme for the Singapore race.
As a result of this early engine change, Russell will exceed the season allocation of power unit components, triggering a grid penalty of at least 10 places. It is likely that he will start from the back of the grid for the Sunday race. However, the penalty does not affect the Sprint race on Saturday, allowing Russell an opportunity to score points in that session.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the challenges faced in Malaysia and highlighted the team’s focus on understanding the performance issues and making the most of the upgrades for Singapore. The team has encountered several reliability problems throughout the 2026 season, with both Russell and Antonelli experiencing power unit failures in previous races.
Singapore’s tight street circuit is known for making overtaking difficult, which will present a significant challenge for Russell as he attempts to recover from the grid penalty. Nevertheless, Russell’s previous victory at this venue last season may provide some confidence as he looks to navigate the weekend.
The penalty and engine update underline the ongoing reliability concerns Mercedes is addressing this season. While the exact grid drop has not been confirmed beyond the minimum 10-place penalty, the team is preparing to adapt its strategy accordingly. Russell’s ability to score points in the Sprint race could prove important in maintaining his championship campaign amid these setbacks.
