George Russell secured a narrow victory at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, holding off Max Verstappen in a tense finish that underscored the chaotic nature of the race. This marked Russell’s third win of the season, achieved by just 0.1 seconds over the Red Bull Racing driver.
The race in Baku was marked by multiple incidents and retirements, with six drivers forced to retire due to various mechanical issues. Among those who did not finish were Lando Norris, Alex Albon, Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, Valtteri Bottas, and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. Despite the challenges, Russell managed to lead strongly from pole position, navigating tyre difficulties and several Safety Car restarts throughout the event.
Max Verstappen applied intense pressure on Russell in the closing laps but was unable to find a way past. Isack Hadjar completed the podium with third place, securing a Red Bull Racing double podium finish. Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli finished fourth and fifth respectively, with Antonelli recovering well after a crash in qualifying. Lewis Hamilton came in sixth, followed by Arvid Lindblad and Esteban Ocon. Notably, Haas scored points for the first time this season, with Lindblad and Ollie Bearman finishing in the top ten.
The race featured multiple Safety Car periods triggered by incidents, including a collision involving Alpine teammates Colapinto and Gasly, as well as Norris. Russell praised his team for their efforts over what he described as an incredible weekend. He also highlighted the challenge posed by Verstappen and mentioned dealing with a turbo issue near the end of the race.
With the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix behind them, teams now turn their attention to the next event scheduled at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, set for October 2-4, 2026. The race in Baku demonstrated the fine margins and unpredictable nature of the sport, with Russell’s composed performance standing out amid a weekend of ups and downs for many drivers.
