George Russell remains in the hunt for the 2026 Formula 1® Drivers’ Championship despite trailing teammate Kimi Antonelli by a significant margin. Following his victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Russell has narrowed the gap, keeping his title hopes alive with eight races still to go in the season.
At this stage, Antonelli leads the championship with 302 points, holding a 66-point advantage over Russell, who has accumulated 236 points. With a maximum of 208 points still available across the remaining rounds—including a Sprint race in Singapore—the championship battle is far from settled. Russell’s win in Azerbaijan reduced Antonelli’s lead from 81 to 66 points, marking a notable swing in momentum.
The British driver faces a challenging task, needing to outscore Antonelli by an average of 8.25 points per race to close the gap. Complicating matters, Russell is expected to serve a grid penalty for new power unit components in one of the final races, whereas Antonelli has already taken his penalty earlier in the season.
Russell has shown strong form at several upcoming circuits on the calendar, having previously won at São Paulo, Las Vegas, and Singapore. These tracks could provide valuable opportunities for him to gain crucial points. Earlier in the season, Russell struggled to adapt to the new 2026 car regulations, but his performance has improved since the summer break. His dominant pole position and race win in Azerbaijan highlighted this resurgence, with Russell noting that he has regained confidence and feels “like myself again.”
While Antonelli remains the clear championship favorite with a sizeable points lead, Russell has expressed a mindset focused on winning every remaining race rather than simply chasing the points gap. He also feels less pressure compared to Antonelli, who carries the expectations of leading the title fight.
Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team principal Toto Wolff has praised Russell’s recent form, acknowledging the driver’s resilience and adaptability under the new regulations. The season’s final phase will test both drivers as they continue to compete for the championship within the same team.
Russell’s pursuit of the title remains open but demanding, with the remaining races offering a platform to challenge Antonelli’s lead. The dynamics within Mercedes and the drivers’ performances at key circuits will be central to how the championship unfolds in the closing stages of the 2026 season.
