Red Bull Racing’s Laurent Mekies has openly acknowledged that Mercedes and their driver Kimi Antonelli were faster during the 2026 United States Grand Prix, which impacted Max Verstappen’s ability to challenge for victory. Despite starting on the front row, Verstappen finished third as Mercedes executed a more effective race strategy.

The race, held on October 25, 2026, saw Kimi Antonelli secure a commanding win for Mercedes, finishing 13 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Red Bull opted for a two-stop strategy, while Mercedes and Antonelli chose a one-stop approach, which Mekies admitted proved to be the faster option. Red Bull also faced difficulties with tyre degradation on the soft compounds during Verstappen’s race, which further limited their pace.

Mekies was clear in his assessment, stating that there were no excuses regarding tyres or strategy for Red Bull’s performance gap. He highlighted that both Antonelli and Mercedes had the edge in pace, which was reflected in the race outcome. Verstappen’s race engineer duties were temporarily handled by Tom Hart, who Mekies praised for managing the complex situation well under pressure.

At the start of the race, both Verstappen and his teammate Isack Hadjar lost positions due to poor launches and battery deployment issues. Mekies noted that while Red Bull’s starts have improved over time, they still lag behind their rivals. He indicated that meaningful improvements in this area are expected only next year, following design and hardware updates.

The 2026 United States Grand Prix highlighted the challenges Red Bull faced in matching Mercedes’ race pace and tyre management on this occasion. Mekies’ comments underline the straightforward nature of the performance gap, without attributing it to external factors. The race result reflected the effectiveness of Mercedes’ strategy and Antonelli’s pace, which Red Bull could not overcome despite their efforts.

This candid evaluation from Mekies provides insight into Red Bull’s current competitive position and the areas they aim to improve. The team’s focus on starts and tyre performance will be key elements to watch as they prepare for upcoming events in the championship.
