Racing Bulls reflect on double points but trail Alpine

Racing Bulls secured a valuable double points haul at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, with Liam Lawson crossing the line in P8 and Arvid Lindblad following in P9. Despite the solid performance on paper, the team remains sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, trailing Alpine by 16 points in the battle for fifth.

The weekend unfolded at a steady pace for both drivers. Lawson managed to reach Q3 for the second consecutive race, while Lindblad showed promising pace in practice. However, moments of misfortune and tactical swings during the race left the pair unable to close the gap on their closest rivals.

On race day, a well-timed Virtual Safety Car stop allowed Alpine’s Pierre Gasly to leapfrog Lawson on track. Later in the stint, Franco Colapinto briefly demoted both Racing Bulls drivers before he was handed a penalty that ultimately relegated him from P8 to P10, restoring Lawson and Lindblad to the points-paying positions.

Saturday’s practice sessions saw Lindblad set the fastest time among the team, posting P9, P7 and P10 in FP1, FP2 and FP3 respectively. He was unable to convert that into a Q3 berth, lining up on the grid in P11 before climbing back to ninth by the finish. Lawson, meanwhile, fought hard in qualifying but “struggled for pace” and admitted he was “unlucky” when the Virtual Safety Car intervened.

The key moments of the Grand Prix highlighted how tight margins can influence a team’s scorecard. Gasly’s pit stop under the neutralised period proved decisive, while Colapinto’s penalty served as a reminder that regulations enforcement can swing race positions at a late stage.

Team principal Alan Permane described the weekend as strong overall but acknowledged that the race itself “retreated a little bit” as Alpine “had the measure of us today.” His remarks reflected a blend of satisfaction at securing points from both cars and frustration at missing an opportunity to overtake their immediate challengers in the standings.

With the gap to Alpine still at 16 points, Racing Bulls will be aiming for a step forward when the championship heads to the Red Bull Ring in Austria. FansBRANDS® readers will be keen to see how the team adapts to a circuit where strategic calls and pace on medium-speed corners often prove crucial.
