Charles Leclerc provided an insightful assessment of Ferrari’s performance during the Friday practice sessions at the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, drawing attention to tyre degradation and the pace of rival teams as significant factors. Despite topping the FP2 timesheets and securing fourth place in FP1, Leclerc highlighted challenges that could shape the weekend’s racing dynamics.

Leclerc described the track conditions as dirty and slippery, which made the sessions tricky and suggested that the grip levels were likely to improve as the weekend progressed. While Ferrari posted competitive lap times, Leclerc pointed out that Red Bull Racing and Mercedes had shown strong pace, marking them as key contenders. Notably, Max Verstappen of Red Bull did not complete a soft-tyre lap in FP2, and his teammate Isack Hadjar made some mistakes, indicating that Ferrari was not yet the outright favourite.

Mercedes introduced a significant upgrade package, but their drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli finished seventh and eighth respectively in FP2, without clean soft-tyre laps. Leclerc expects Mercedes to make rapid progress as the weekend unfolds. The Ferrari driver also emphasized that tyre degradation was “insane” and anticipated it to be the main talking point throughout the race weekend, heavily influencing strategy decisions.

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur echoed Leclerc’s observations, confirming that tyre degradation and poor track grip were major challenges for the team. He stressed the importance of anticipating improvements in track conditions for Saturday and Sunday, which will be crucial for race performance. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton also demonstrated competitive pace for Ferrari, finishing sixth in FP1 and fifth in FP2.

The practice sessions in Bahrain revealed a complex picture for Ferrari. While the team showed promising speed, the conditions and tyre wear issues suggest that the race strategies will need to be carefully managed. The performances of Red Bull and Mercedes underline the competitive environment in the championship, with all three teams closely monitoring each other’s progress.

Leclerc’s comments provide a clear view of the current challenges facing Ferrari at this stage of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend. Tyre degradation stands out as a critical factor, and the evolving track conditions will likely play a significant role in shaping the race outcome. The insights from both the driver and team principal underline the importance of adaptability and strategic planning in the sport.
