Charles Leclerc’s 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza came to an early end following a high-speed crash on the second lap. While defending fourth place from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri through the fast Parabolica corner, Leclerc lost rear grip, causing his Ferrari to spin and collide with the barriers.

The incident prompted a red flag to allow for barrier repairs, temporarily halting the race. Despite the severity of the crash, Leclerc was able to walk away uninjured and was subsequently taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks, where he was cleared without any injuries.

Earlier in the race, Leclerc had pushed his teammate Lewis Hamilton wide at the start, which resulted in Hamilton dropping to eighth place. Meanwhile, George Russell took the lead from polesitter Pierre Gasly during the unfolding events on track. The race was set for a standing restart, with teams permitted to change tyres during the stoppage.

The crash occurred as Leclerc was defending his position aggressively, but the loss of rear grip through the Parabolica—a corner known for its high speed and challenging exit—proved costly. The stewards noted the earlier incident between Leclerc and Hamilton but decided against further investigation.

Other drivers involved in the early race dynamics included Mercedes’ George Russell, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, Max Verstappen, Franco Colapinto, and Kimi Antonelli, though none were reported to have been directly affected by Leclerc’s crash. The red flag allowed teams to regroup and prepare for the restart under standing start conditions.

Leclerc’s retirement marked a significant moment in the race, particularly for Ferrari, as it impacted both their drivers’ chances in the early stages. Hamilton’s compromised start added further challenges for the team. The incident underlined the fine margins at play in defending positions at Monza, especially through high-speed corners like the Parabolica.

Following the medical clearance, Leclerc’s focus will likely return to upcoming events, while Ferrari will assess the impact of the early exit on their race strategy. The stewards’ decision to not pursue further action regarding the on-track contact between Leclerc and Hamilton leaves the matter settled for now.
