Honda encountered significant challenges with its Formula 1® power unit that affected Aston Martin Racing’s start to the 2026 season. The full extent of these issues only became clear during January’s winter testing and early running at the Barcelona shakedown, revealing a complex set of performance and reliability problems.
Entering the 2026 season, expectations were high for Aston Martin, supported by a strong technical team led by Adrian Newey and a works partnership with Honda. However, the new regulations introduced major changes to the power unit architecture, including a substantial increase in MGU-K power and the removal of the MGU-H, which complicated development efforts. Honda’s power unit showed inconsistent performance, reliability concerns, and battery-related issues that limited valuable track time during testing.
The challenges forced Honda to dial back some performance gains to improve reliability, which slowed the overall development progress. The internal combustion engine currently lacks outright power compared to rivals, with an upgrade planned for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort aimed at reducing this deficit. Electrical efficiency and drivability have also been difficult to manage, particularly due to the absence of the MGU-H, which previously helped control boost pressure.
Honda’s current Formula 1® power unit project differs from its previous collaboration with Red Bull, focusing more on technology transfer within the company rather than solely on racing performance. Despite a major upgrade to Aston Martin’s AMR26 car in Hungary that showed some improvement, the team still trails competitors such as Cadillac by around one second per lap.
Shintaro Orihara, Honda’s trackside manager and chief engineer, highlighted that the combination of regulatory changes and technical challenges contributed to the difficulties faced early in the season. The battery issues, in particular, affected track running and energy deployment strategies, requiring compromises between power output and reliability.
Looking ahead, the planned upgrade at Zandvoort is intended to address the power deficit of the internal combustion engine and improve overall competitiveness. While the start of the 2026 season has been more challenging than anticipated, the partnership between Honda and Aston Martin remains focused on overcoming these hurdles within the framework of the new regulations.
