Honda has unveiled technical details of its updated 'Spec 2' power unit, which is set to make its debut with Aston Martin at the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix. This upgrade aims to address earlier reliability and vibration challenges faced by Aston Martin and to improve the team’s competitiveness against key rivals in the championship.

The 2026 season began with Aston Martin encountering difficulties related to the Honda power unit, particularly concerning reliability and vibration issues. Following early fixes, the team shifted focus towards performance upgrades, including the introduction of a B-spec car at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Spec 2 power unit represents the next step in this development process, with expectations of enhanced engine performance to help close the gap to faster teams such as Racing Bulls and Alpine.

Honda’s Shintaro Orihara, Trackside General Manager and Chief Engineer, explained that the improvements in the Spec 2 power unit include a redesigned pre-chamber to enable faster combustion, changes to the piston shape, and modifications to the lubrication system aimed at reducing friction. These technical updates were tested during a filming day at the Hungaroring, alongside Aston Martin’s 16 upgrades to the car.

While Orihara confirmed that internal targets for power gains were met, he did not disclose specific horsepower figures or detailed performance data. This cautious approach reflects the competitive nature of Formula 1® development, where teams often keep precise technical gains confidential. Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will be the first to race with the Spec 2 power unit, with Alonso expressing optimism that the second half of the season could represent a fresh phase for the team’s championship campaign.

The introduction of the Spec 2 power unit comes as part of Aston Martin’s ongoing efforts to improve reliability and performance after a challenging start to the season. The team’s upgrade strategy has combined power unit developments with aerodynamic and chassis improvements, aiming to enhance overall race pace and consistency. The Dutch Grand Prix will provide the first opportunity to assess how these changes translate into on-track performance.

Honda’s technical update is expected to contribute to narrowing the performance gap to leading competitors, though the exact impact remains to be seen during race weekends. The collaboration between Honda and Aston Martin continues to evolve as they seek to optimize the power unit’s integration with the car’s broader systems. This update is a clear indication of the ongoing development race within the Formula 1® paddock, where incremental gains can be crucial.

Fernando Alonso’s positive outlook highlights the team’s belief in the potential of the Spec 2 power unit to support a stronger run in the latter part of the season. However, the cautious tone from Honda’s engineering leadership underscores that while progress has been made, the full benefits will depend on how the package performs in competitive conditions. The Dutch Grand Prix will be an important milestone for Aston Martin and Honda as they continue their pursuit of improved results in the championship.
