Ferrari faced challenges translating their strong practice pace into qualifying performance at the 2026 United States Grand Prix in Austin. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc highlighted key factors behind the team’s qualifying deficit, pointing to issues with straight-line speed and tyre performance as significant hurdles.

Leclerc secured fourth on the grid, with Hamilton just behind in fifth, separated by a mere 0.044 seconds. Despite showing promising speed during practice sessions, Ferrari struggled to maintain that advantage in qualifying. Hamilton expressed satisfaction with the car’s handling but identified a lack of straight-line speed as a critical factor limiting their qualifying positions.

Hamilton noted that rivals, particularly Red Bull and Mercedes, have made progress in chassis development and downforce, which has helped close the gap in cornering performance. However, Ferrari continues to face difficulties matching their competitors on the straights. He estimated that Red Bull’s power unit offers a straight-line advantage ranging from 0.3 to 0.5 seconds, making it challenging for Ferrari to compete despite a well-balanced car.

Leclerc expressed disappointment with his qualifying lap, attributing the result to a less effective out lap and difficulties in managing tyre temperatures during the final phase of qualifying (Q3). He emphasized the importance of understanding tyre performance more precisely, as even slight deviations from the optimal temperature window can lead to significant lap time losses.

Hamilton also acknowledged the challenges of overtaking at the Circuit of the Americas but remained optimistic that strategic decisions during the race could help improve Ferrari’s position. Both drivers’ comments underline the fine margins that currently separate Ferrari from their main rivals in qualifying, especially concerning power unit performance and tyre management.

The insights from Hamilton and Leclerc provide a clear picture of Ferrari’s situation after qualifying in Austin. While the team demonstrated strong potential in practice, the session highlighted ongoing challenges in straight-line speed and tyre performance that need addressing. These factors shaped Ferrari’s qualifying outcome and will likely influence their approach to the race.
