Gasly takes first pole as Alpine revives folding wing

Pierre Gasly claimed his first career pole position at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, marking a significant moment six years after his previous victory with AlphaTauri. This achievement came as a surprise not only to fans but also to Alpine, who had initially targeted a top-10 qualifying position rather than contending for pole.

Alpine’s performance was boosted by the reintroduction of their folding rear wing, a technical feature that had been used during the early part of the season but was shelved until the Italian Grand Prix. The A526 car was set up with a low-downforce configuration to suit Monza’s long straights, aiming to reduce aerodynamic drag and maximize top speed.

The folding rear wing design employed by Alpine features two collapsing flaps, differing from the more conventional DRS-like system. This choice was made to improve efficiency and enhance diffuser interaction on the high-speed Monza circuit. Additionally, Alpine reverted to the original wing actuator specification by removing extra aerodynamic elements for this race weekend. These technical decisions formed part of Alpine’s approach to balance straight-line speed with sufficient downforce.

Two weeks before Monza, Alpine introduced a major upgrade package at Zandvoort that focused on improving downforce in high-speed corners. However, for the Italian Grand Prix, the team prioritized straight-line speed, which was reflected in their low-drag setup. Alpine managing director Steve Nielsen confirmed that the package contributed to competitive top speeds, helping Gasly secure pole despite strong competition.

Mercedes’ George Russell was a close contender but was affected by an incident involving Max Verstappen on his final qualifying lap, which compromised his chance for a better grid position. Meanwhile, Alpine capitalized on this opportunity, outperforming other leading teams including Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull.

Gasly’s pole at Monza highlights Alpine’s strategic use of aerodynamic configurations tailored to specific circuits. While the team is not yet considered a benchmark in cornering performance, their focus on efficiency and speed on the straights proved effective in this qualifying session. The result underscores how technical choices and track characteristics can influence qualifying outcomes in Formula 1®.

This development offers insight into Alpine’s evolving approach as they balance upgrades and race strategies across different venues. The reintroduction of the folding rear wing at Monza was a calculated move that paid off in securing a notable qualifying position for Gasly and the team.
