The FIA has ratified a set of regulation changes impacting the use of Boost Mode in wet conditions for the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1® season, with further adjustments planned for 2027. These updates aim to enhance safety without compromising the performance balance of the new power units introduced this year.

Earlier in 2026, driver feedback led the FIA to ban the use of Boost Mode during wet-weather sessions due to concerns over the sudden increase in torque creating potential safety risks. The World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) has now approved a partial reinstatement of Boost Mode under wet conditions, but with significant modifications. Instead of increasing power output, Boost Mode will prevent the usual power reduction that occurs when cars slow down on straights in wet weather. This change is intended to reduce closing speeds between cars in low visibility situations, thereby improving safety on track. However, the overtaking function of Boost Mode remains disabled in these conditions.

Alongside the Boost Mode adjustments, the FIA has introduced changes to Heat Hazard declarations, allowing separate enforcement for Sprint races and main events. This provides more flexibility in managing race conditions and safety protocols. Looking ahead to 2027, the power unit energy split will shift to 58% combustion engine and 42% electric power, moving further to a 60-40 ratio in 2028. These changes are designed to balance racing performance with driver feedback and sustainability goals. To accommodate these technical updates without requiring major hardware redesigns, the FIA may limit reconnaissance laps at certain circuits and reduce race distances by one or two laps if necessary.

This nuanced approach addresses safety concerns raised earlier in the season without fully removing the system’s benefits. The separation of Heat Hazard declarations for Sprint and main races also provides race directors with more precise tools to manage variable track conditions.

Looking towards the 2027 season, the shift in power unit energy distribution signals a gradual move towards greater combustion engine contribution, which may influence car behaviour and race strategies. The FIA’s decision to potentially reduce race distances or limit reconnaissance laps is a practical measure to manage the impact of these changes on race weekend logistics and car reliability.
