The FIA has clarified its position on the use of self-learning algorithms in the 2026 Formula 1® power units, explaining why banning these systems is not a practical solution despite driver concerns. The adaptive nature of these algorithms, which adjust energy deployment dynamically, has been a source of frustration for several drivers this season.
Drivers including Oscar Piastri have voiced their dissatisfaction with the unpredictable behaviour of the power units during races and qualifying sessions. These algorithms modify energy output lap-by-lap and even within a lap, responding to driver inputs and external conditions. This complexity can make it challenging for drivers to anticipate power delivery, affecting their performance on track. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella noted that power unit settings are nearly identical between teammates, yet the algorithms cause noticeable differences in how the cars behave.
In response to these concerns, FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis acknowledged the frustrations but argued that banning the self-learning algorithms would likely worsen energy management. He explained that without these systems, drivers would face increased “clipping,” a term describing wasted energy, which could lead to less efficient use of the limited energy allowed by regulations. Tombazis pointed out that the complexity of the 2026 power units and the strict energy limits make it impossible for human drivers to manage all parameters optimally on their own.
The sporting regulations require drivers to operate “alone and unaided,” but full manual control over energy deployment is currently impractical given the technical constraints. The FIA is planning regulatory changes for the 2028 season, including a gradual shift to a 60-40 power split between the internal combustion engine and electric components. Tombazis believes this adjustment will improve driver control but will not completely remove the need for algorithmic assistance.
The 2026 power unit regulations are more complex than the FIA initially intended, which has contributed to driver dissatisfaction. Teams like McLaren and Ferrari, and drivers such as Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, and Lewis Hamilton, have all been indirectly affected by these challenges. The FIA’s stance reflects a balance between maintaining competitive racing and managing the technical realities of modern power unit design.
While fans have generally responded positively to the racing under the new regulations, the drivers’ feedback highlights ongoing issues with power unit behaviour. The FIA’s explanation underscores the difficulty in reconciling driver control with the sophisticated energy management systems that are now integral to Formula 1® power units.
These developments illustrate the technical and regulatory challenges faced by the sport as it evolves. The planned changes for 2028 aim to address some of the current concerns, but the fundamental complexity of the power units means that some level of algorithmic control will remain necessary to optimise performance within the energy limits.
