The FIA has declared a ‘heat hazard’ for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix weekend at the Red Bull Ring, responding to forecasted temperatures exceeding 31°C. This declaration mandates the installation of a Driver Cooling System in all Formula 1® cars to help mitigate the effects of extreme heat on drivers during the event.
Following regulations introduced after the challenging conditions at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, the cooling system is designed to circulate cold fluid through a fireproof vest worn by drivers. While the vest itself is optional, every car must have the system’s core components installed, including a pump, plumbing, and a thermal store. If a driver chooses to wear the cooling vest, ballast adjustments are made to compensate for the added weight.
The heat hazard declaration reflects the FIA’s ongoing commitment to driver safety under demanding environmental conditions. The forecasted heat index above 31°C at Spielberg prompted this measure, aiming to reduce heat stress and maintain driver performance and wellbeing during the race weekend.
Among the drivers, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri has expressed his intention to wear the cooling vest, noting that he has prepared for extreme heat conditions. While acknowledging the system is not perfect, he believes it can provide some relief during the physically demanding race. In contrast, Red Bull Racing’s Isack Hadjar voiced some skepticism about the need for the vest, suggesting that the car itself would likely be more affected by heat than he would.
The first practice session of the weekend will give all 22 drivers the opportunity to test the cooling system and decide whether to use the vest. This approach allows drivers to assess the system’s comfort and effectiveness under real track conditions before making a final choice for the race.
The Driver Cooling System represents a targeted safety response to the challenges posed by rising temperatures in the sport. While its impact on performance remains a personal preference for each driver, the mandatory installation ensures that teams are prepared to support driver health in hot environments.
