Ferrari faced significant challenges with tyre wear and overall race pace during the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, as both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc struggled to maintain competitive performance in hot conditions. The severe rear tyre degradation affected their ability to stay in contention, leading to a disappointing outcome for the Scuderia at the Red Bull Ring.
Starting from third on the grid, Hamilton initially showed promise by overtaking Leclerc and engaging in a close battle with Max Verstappen. However, the excessive rear tyre wear forced him to adopt a three-stop strategy, which ultimately did not yield the desired results. Meanwhile, Leclerc, who had qualified strongly in second, dropped back to eighth place during the race as he grappled with rear grip issues and an unclear car setup.
The difficulties encountered by Ferrari were compounded by power unit overheating problems that affected Hamilton’s engine performance. Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur acknowledged that the team had over-pushed the tyres early in the race and lacked the necessary pace compared to rivals Mercedes and Red Bull. He described the race as a learning experience amid these challenges.
Hamilton commented on the car’s difficult balance, noting that it was hard to keep up with the competition under the circumstances. Leclerc also highlighted the contrast in the car’s behaviour, saying the front-end felt strong but the rear grip was lacking, which made finding a stable balance during the race a challenge. This issue has been more pronounced for Leclerc recently, as he has struggled more than Hamilton to extract optimal performance from the SF-26 in both qualifying and race conditions.
Other teams, including Mercedes and Red Bull, showed stronger race pace at the Austrian Grand Prix, with George Russell and Max Verstappen maintaining more consistent tyre performance. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was also part of the competitive field, but Ferrari’s tyre wear and overheating issues stood out as key factors limiting their race pace.
Ferrari’s experience in Austria underlines the ongoing challenges the team faces in managing tyre degradation and car balance in demanding conditions. While the team principal pointed to early tyre overuse and a lack of outright pace as the main reasons for the result, the drivers’ feedback reflects the complexity of adapting the SF-26 to varying track and weather conditions. Both Hamilton and Leclerc are seeking ways to improve the car’s rear grip and overall race performance as the season progresses.
