A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Mark Walter and TWG Global, the owners and financial backers of the Cadillac Formula 1® team, alleging misuse of insurance company funds. The complaint claims that Walter diverted billions of dollars from insurance assets to support his broader business interests, which include sports franchises and motorsport ventures.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, accuses Walter of using TWG Global and affiliated insurance companies such as Delaware Life Insurance and Group 1001 to conceal federal investigations and funnel approximately 42% of insurance assets—around $17 billion—into his private business network. This network reportedly includes stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, and various motorsport projects.
TWG Motorsport, a division of TWG Global, operates the Cadillac Formula 1® team, which was formed after acquiring Andretti Global and partnering with General Motors. Valtteri Bottas is among the drivers for Cadillac Racing. The plaintiff, Ira Rosner, has alleged that key financial disclosures were intentionally withheld during these transactions. Group 1001 Insurance has acknowledged the lawsuit but denies any wrongdoing and has stated its intention to defend itself vigorously.
Despite the ongoing legal and financial scrutiny, no criminal charges have been filed against Mark Walter or other executives involved. Walter has reportedly agreed to sell stakes in the Los Angeles Lakers and Chelsea FC amid the investigation, but TWG Global has denied any plans to sell the Cadillac Formula 1® team as of August 2026. TWG Global remains both an investor and operational partner in the racing outfit.
The lawsuit highlights the complex financial arrangements behind some of the sport’s recent team ownership changes, reflecting the broader involvement of private equity and insurance entities in motorsport. However, the impact of these legal proceedings on the Cadillac Formula 1® team’s future performance or operations remains unclear at this stage.
