The 2026 Formula 1® Hungarian Grand Prix was marked by unexpected confusion caused by a technical malfunction in the blue-flag system. This issue affected several drivers and teams, leading to incidents on track and a series of penalties that took into account the unusual circumstances.

During the race on July 26, 2026, the blue-flag system, which is designed to alert drivers when they are about to be lapped, failed to display the correct signals on steering wheel displays. Instead of showing clear blue flags with driver numbers, the system showed random blue flags without identification, leaving drivers uncertain about when they were being lapped. This malfunction directly impacted drivers from McLaren, Williams, and Haas.

Esteban Ocon of Haas explained that he was unaware he was being lapped, which led to him unintentionally blocking Isack Hadjar for several corners. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz of Williams collided with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri while attempting to lap him. This incident caused Sainz to lose the race lead to his teammate Lando Norris. The stewards issued Sainz a five-second penalty but considered the blue-flag confusion and blind spots as mitigating factors. Similarly, Oliver Bearman from Haas received a five-second penalty for not respecting blue flags when lapped by Hadjar, with the malfunctioning system cited as a contributing factor.
