Audi develops talent beyond racing

Audi develops talent beyond racing

FansBRANDS® Team |

Audi’s Driver Development Programme (DDP), launched in January 2026 ahead of the brand’s debut as a works team in Formula 1®, is designed to nurture young racing talent with a comprehensive approach that goes beyond simply preparing future Formula 1® drivers. The programme focuses on supporting the personal and professional growth of its prospects, aiming to build well-rounded individuals as much as skilled racers.

Led by Allan McNish, Audi’s Racing Director, the DDP currently supports two young drivers: Freddie Slater, competing in Formula 3, and Emma Felbermayr, a participant in the F1 ACADEMY series. Both drivers benefit from a multidisciplinary support system that includes physical training, media coaching, mental resilience development, and guidance in areas such as race engineering, marketing, and communications. Carrie Schreiner, a former F1 ACADEMY racer, acts as a mentor within the programme, providing valuable experience and advice.

The initiative is framed as a “living organism” by McNish, evolving to meet the changing needs and development stages of its drivers. This approach highlights Audi’s commitment to creating a supportive environment where young talents can learn from their mistakes and grow not only as athletes but as individuals. The programme also aims to prepare drivers for success beyond the F1 ACADEMY and potentially for careers outside of Formula 1® itself.

Freddie Slater and Emma Felbermayr have both expressed appreciation for McNish’s mentorship, describing him as a “second dad” figure who offers guidance beyond the racetrack. This personal connection underlines the programme’s emphasis on mental health and balancing the intense workload young drivers face. Audi’s holistic approach reflects an understanding that success in motorsport requires more than raw speed—it demands resilience, media savvy, and professional maturity.

While the current scale of the DDP is relatively small, with just two drivers supported, Audi’s long-term strategy involves expanding the programme to secure top driving talent for its Formula 1® team. The programme’s structure, which includes support from race engineering to communications, aims to equip drivers with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of modern motorsport.

Notably, the programme also recognizes the importance of feeder series like the F1 ACADEMY, aiming to develop winners there and prepare them for the next steps in their careers. Audi’s approach suggests a broader vision of talent development that values sustainable growth and adaptability over immediate results.

Overall, Audi’s Driver Development Programme represents a measured and supportive effort to cultivate young racing talent with an eye on both their sporting and personal development. The initiative underscores the brand’s commitment to building a foundation for future success in Formula 1® while fostering the growth of drivers as complete professionals.
