Audi advances base near Hinwil to aid development

FansBRANDS® Team |

Audi has confirmed plans to expand its presence in Formula 1® by developing a new campus near its existing facility in Hinwil, Switzerland. This move marks a significant step in the manufacturer’s long-term commitment to the sport, aiming to enhance its operational capabilities and foster innovation within the team.

The new campus, located on Zurichstrasse close to the current Hinwil factory, began partial operations in the summer of 2026. Full completion of the site is scheduled for 2030. Audi took full control of the Sauber operation in January 2025, following a gradual acquisition process, and this development reflects the brand’s intention to build a dedicated environment tailored to its Formula 1® ambitions.

Hinwil has a rich history in Formula 1®, having served as the base for Peter Sauber’s team since 1970. Audi plans to retain the existing facility’s wind tunnel and manufacturing operations, which have undergone significant modernization, including upgrades to the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) cluster and the wind tunnel itself. Notably, the wind tunnel, which Mercedes funded in 2002 to facilitate Kimi Räikkönen’s move, remains a key asset despite redevelopment plans.

While the Hinwil site continues to focus on aerodynamics and manufacturing, Audi’s engine development remains at Neuberg. Additionally, the team maintains a satellite office in Bicester, UK, which plays a role in attracting experienced personnel who may be reluctant to relocate to Switzerland. This multi-location approach supports Audi’s strategy to assemble and retain world-class talent across different regions.

Mattia Binotto, Audi Formula 1® CEO and team principal, highlighted the importance of the new campus in creating a collaborative and innovative environment. He emphasized that the facility is designed from the ground up to embody Audi’s culture and ambitions, marking a new chapter for the Audi Revolut Formula 1® Team in Hinwil. The project has also received support from the Municipality of Hinwil, reflecting a strong local partnership.

The development of the new campus is part of Audi’s broader effort to establish a solid foundation in Formula 1®, focusing on infrastructure and people rather than immediate competitive results. The phased approach to the campus’s opening allows the team to gradually integrate new capabilities while continuing to operate from the historic Hinwil base.

This expansion underscores Audi’s commitment to the sport’s technical and operational demands, aiming to build a sustainable platform for future growth. The full completion by 2030 will provide the team with state-of-the-art facilities aligned with the evolving needs of Formula 1® racing.
