Aston Martin Racing is set to introduce a notable upgrade package to their AMR26 car ahead of the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. The upgrade, often referred to as the B-spec AMR26, primarily targets aerodynamic improvements and weight reduction. Nearly all aerodynamic surfaces have been revised, although the front suspension remains largely unchanged. The power unit and gearbox will continue unchanged for now, with plans for a new engine update scheduled after the summer break. The chassis has been lightened, which required Aston Martin to undertake a fresh crash test for the monocoque. Adrian Newey, the team’s chief technical officer, has led the development of this package.
Despite the scale of the upgrade, Aston Martin’s team principal Mike Krack has urged for realistic expectations. The package is seen more as a reset rather than an immediate performance breakthrough, with the team anticipating a period of optimization over several races. This approach reflects the need to rebuild competitiveness after a slow start to the season, rather than expecting a sudden leap forward.
Valtteri Bottas, providing commentary on the upgrade, noted that the front suspension is reportedly the only major component carried over from the current car, suggesting that most other areas have undergone significant changes. The team is also reconsidering its high-rake aerodynamic philosophy following difficulties encountered earlier in the season. Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin’s owner, has invested heavily in the project, including recruiting Adrian Newey and constructing a new factory. However, Stroll is known for his low tolerance of underperformance, adding pressure on the team to improve results. Despite this, the upgrade is not being framed as a “make or break” moment, but rather as a step in an ongoing development process.
The timing of the upgrade is somewhat unusual, arriving during the second weekend of a double-header before the summer break. This schedule means the team will have limited immediate data to assess its full impact before the pause in racing. The power unit update from Honda, which is expected to bring further gains, is planned for introduction after the summer break, meaning the current package focuses on aerodynamic and structural improvements.
