Andrea Kimi Antonelli faced a frustrating setback during the qualifying session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after an avoidable crash in Q1 left him starting 16th on the grid. The incident compromised his chances for a stronger race position despite showing promising pace earlier in the session.

Antonelli’s crash occurred at Turn 1 when he hit the inside wall, causing terminal suspension damage to his Mercedes W17. The error was unforced and attributed to a misjudgment of grip levels combined with a heavier headwind on his second flying lap. His initial lap time was sufficient to advance to Q2, but the crash ended his qualifying prematurely.

Before the crash, Antonelli had missed much of Thursday’s practice due to a hydraulic issue, which affected his preparation for the weekend. Meanwhile, his teammate George Russell secured pole position by a significant margin, underlining Mercedes’ strong performance in Baku.

Antonelli acknowledged Russell’s impressive pace and Mercedes’ competitiveness in the session. Reflecting on his own mistake, he expressed frustration at the unnecessary nature of the crash and the impact it had on his qualifying result. He also noted the challenge ahead in Baku, where overtaking is known to be difficult compared to circuits like Monza, where he previously made a notable comeback from the back of the grid to win.

Despite the setback, Antonelli outlined his approach for the race: focusing on a clean start, avoiding incidents, and maintaining a strong pace to recover positions. He emphasized the need to learn from the experience and improve his performance in future sessions.

The qualifying session highlighted the fine margins involved in extracting lap times at a demanding street circuit like Baku. Antonelli’s comments underline how quickly conditions such as grip changes and wind can affect a lap, especially when a driver is pushing to improve.

This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by drivers in Formula 1® qualifying, where even small miscalculations can have significant consequences. Antonelli’s reflections provide insight into the pressures of competing at the front and the ongoing learning curve for a driver leading the championship.
