Kimi Antonelli has been handed a three-place grid penalty following the qualifying session at the 2026 Formula 1® Hungarian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver was found to have not sufficiently reduced his speed under yellow flag conditions during his final qualifying lap, resulting in a demotion from fourth to seventh on the starting grid.
The incident occurred at the final corner of the Hungaroring, where yellow flags were displayed due to Max Verstappen’s spin and stationary car in the runoff area. Stewards reviewed Antonelli’s lap and determined that he only minimally lifted off the throttle and was still faster through the corner compared to his previous lap. This breach of the yellow flag rules led to the penalty, along with a penalty point added to his racing license.
While the stewards noted that a five-place grid drop could have been applied, they mitigated the sanction to three places, taking into account Antonelli’s limited reaction time and some degree of speed reduction. Additionally, Antonelli received a warning for driving too slowly on his in-lap after qualifying. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, also received a three-place grid penalty for impeding McLaren’s Oscar Piastri at Turn 1, which promoted Piastri to third on the grid and moved Verstappen to the second row.
Despite the penalty, Antonelli’s initial qualifying performance showed strong pace as he secured fourth place on the grid, behind McLaren’s Lando Norris who took pole position, and the two Ferraris. The session highlighted the tight margins and strict enforcement of safety regulations in the sport, particularly regarding yellow flag zones where drivers must slow down to ensure safety.
The stewards’ decisions reshaped the starting order for the Hungarian Grand Prix, with Norris leading the grid, Piastri elevated to third, and Verstappen moving up to the second row. These adjustments underline the importance of adhering to track regulations during qualifying, as even minor lapses can lead to significant consequences on race day.
The penalties applied to Antonelli and Hamilton reflect the FIA’s ongoing commitment to safety and fair competition in the championship. Both drivers will need to adapt their race strategies accordingly, starting from less advantageous positions than their raw qualifying times suggested.
