Kimi Antonelli took a significant step towards his first Drivers’ Championship by winning the 2026 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas. His commanding performance, executed with a one-stop strategy, brought him within two points of securing the title at the upcoming race in Mexico City.

Antonelli’s victory came under specific conditions: he needed to win with George Russell finishing ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton fifth or lower to clinch the championship immediately. However, Russell finished eighth and Hamilton fourth, meaning Antonelli’s title remains undecided for now. Despite this, the race underscored Antonelli’s strong form and the narrowing gap in the championship standings.

The race also highlighted notable performances and challenges among other leading drivers. Charles Leclerc secured second place, marking his second consecutive runner-up finish. His result was supported by Ferrari’s power unit upgrade and a solid race pace. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton managed to finish fourth despite ongoing balance issues with his car, reducing the points gap to Russell to just one.

George Russell faced a difficult race, struggling with pace and receiving a five-second penalty for track limits infringements, which contributed to his eighth-place finish. Max Verstappen had a challenging weekend as well, hindered by power unit inconsistencies and tyre strategy issues after a poor start. He ultimately finished third, benefiting from a late Virtual Safety Car period.

Other drivers experienced mixed fortunes. Isack Hadjar, after a promising start, ended the race in sixth due to car-related problems. McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri underperformed relative to their rivals, finishing fifth and seventh respectively, with Norris acknowledging the team’s pace deficit. Meanwhile, Alisha Palmowski secured the 2026 F1 Academy title in Austin, completing a strong season with five wins, supported by Red Bull and Campos Racing.

This race at the Circuit of The Americas provided a clear snapshot of the championship situation, with Antonelli edging closer to the title but still needing to secure the necessary points in Mexico City. The event also reflected ongoing technical and strategic challenges faced by several teams, including Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren, shaping the competitive dynamics as the season progresses.
