Kimi Antonelli claimed his first-ever victory in a Formula 1® Sprint race at the 2026 British Grand Prix, held at Silverstone on July 4. The Mercedes driver overtook Lewis Hamilton during the 100km Sprint event and held the lead to secure the win by a margin of 2.745 seconds.

Starting from pole position, Hamilton initially led the Sprint but faced sustained pressure from Antonelli. The decisive move came on lap eight at Stowe corner, where Antonelli managed to pass Hamilton and maintain his advantage until the finish. Lando Norris completed the podium in third place, narrowly ahead of George Russell, who finished fourth. Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen followed in fifth and sixth respectively, while Oscar Piastri and Liam Lawson rounded out the points in seventh and eighth.

The Sprint race took place under dry and mostly sunny conditions, with the majority of drivers starting on medium tyres. Several incidents during the race drew the attention of the stewards. Liam Lawson is under investigation for moving under braking during a late battle with Isack Hadjar. Sergio Perez received a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Fernando Alonso, and Nico Hulkenberg is being looked at for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Additionally, Alex Albon started from the pit lane following an unauthorized suspension setup change.

His performance marked a significant milestone in his Formula 1® career, securing his first Sprint win in a competitive field that included drivers from Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Alpine, and other teams.

The race also highlighted the close competition among the top drivers, with Norris and Russell separated by a narrow margin for third and fourth places. The presence of multiple teams such as Racing Bulls, Cadillac, Aston Martin, Haas, and Audi added further depth to the field, with several drivers involved in on-track battles and investigations.

Following the Sprint race, the focus shifted to the Qualifying session for the British Grand Prix, scheduled later the same day. The results of the Sprint provided an early indication of the drivers' form and track conditions, setting the stage for the main event of the weekend.

This Silverstone Sprint showcased the intensity and unpredictability of the Formula 1® Sprint format, with Antonelli’s breakthrough win underscoring the competitive nature of the 2026 season so far.
