Andrea Kimi Antonelli has taken a significant step toward securing his first Formula 1® World Championship following his victory at the 2026 United States Grand Prix. With five races remaining in the season, starting with the Mexico Grand Prix, Antonelli leads the championship standings and is positioned to become the youngest world champion in the sport’s history.
Antonelli’s win in Austin marked his ninth victory of the season, further extending his lead in the title race. Before the United States Grand Prix, six drivers were still mathematically in contention, but the race results narrowed the field to just three: Antonelli and George Russell of Mercedes, and Lewis Hamilton, now racing for Ferrari. Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Lando Norris have all fallen out of championship contention.
The scenario for Antonelli to clinch the championship at the Mexico Grand Prix was clear but challenging. He needed to win the race while George Russell finished ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton placed fifth. Since this combination did not occur, the title fight remains open. There are still 125 points available across the final five races, including Mexico, Sao Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, assuming the Middle Eastern rounds proceed as planned.
George Russell trails Antonelli by 123 points, while Lewis Hamilton is 124 points behind. To prevent Antonelli from securing the title in Mexico, both Russell and Hamilton would need to win the race and rely on Antonelli scoring very few or no points. Antonelli’s advantage is further strengthened by his superior number of wins this season, which gives him the upper hand on countback if points totals are close.
The championship battle now hinges on the performances in the remaining races, with Mercedes drivers Antonelli and Russell, alongside Hamilton at Ferrari, as the only drivers still mathematically capable of claiming the title. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, and McLaren’s Lando Norris are no longer in the running for the championship.
Antonelli’s dominant form and consistent results have positioned him strongly, but the mathematical possibilities mean the championship will not be decided until later in the season. The Mexico Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez represents a key moment where the title could be sealed, depending on how the contenders perform.
As the season progresses through the final rounds, the focus remains on Antonelli’s ability to maintain his lead and the efforts of Russell and Hamilton to close the gap. The points available and the countback rules ensure that the championship fight retains an element of suspense, even as Antonelli stands on the brink of making history.
