Antonelli currently leads the 2026 Formula 1® championship, having secured six wins and six pole positions. The 2026 cars feature a narrower tyre profile with 18-inch wheels, resulting in a reduced contact patch. This change, combined with a more unstable rear end compared to previous ground effect cars, demands a different handling technique from drivers. The cars are aerodynamically simpler and reportedly more enjoyable to drive, but they require precise and aggressive cornering to optimize performance.
Mercedes team principal Andrea Stella and Pirelli’s head of motorsport Dario Marrafuschi have explained that the new cars necessitate drivers to “attack” corners more aggressively. Antonelli’s style, which focuses on quick steering inputs to shorten the corner radius and rotate the car efficiently, aligns well with these demands. This approach also helps him manage tyre temperatures and wear effectively, especially in conditions with low grip.
In contrast, George Russell’s smoother, more progressive steering style was better suited to the previous generation of ground effect cars but is less effective with the 2026 models. The reduced tyre contact patch and increased sensitivity during combined braking and steering phases challenge drivers who rely on a gentler approach. As a result, Russell’s style does not currently match the handling characteristics of the new cars as well as Antonelli’s does.
