McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella provided insight into the team’s decision to allow Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to race each other freely during the 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Despite both drivers starting outside the top five after a qualifying session that the team described as poorly executed, McLaren chose not to intervene in their on-track battle during the race.
Following qualifying, Piastri and Norris were positioned sixth and eighth respectively, a result that fell short of the team’s expectations. However, during the race, both drivers improved their positions, finishing fourth and fifth, with Norris ahead. Stella explained that the team’s approach was based on the fact that both cars were running on the same tyres, with identical tyre age and performance levels, meaning neither driver had a clear advantage.
Andrea Stella emphasized that McLaren believed Norris needed to overtake Piastri to have a realistic chance of closing the gap to race leader Max Verstappen. The team’s philosophy supports allowing drivers to compete on track when conditions are fair, and Stella described the intra-team racing as entertaining and consistent with this approach.
During the race, a minor incident occurred where Norris felt he was pushed off the track. After review, the team concluded that the contact was less severe than initially perceived and did not warrant intervention. This assessment aligns with McLaren’s intention to maintain fair competition between their drivers while avoiding unnecessary interference.
Piastri showed signs of progress compared to earlier races in the season. Adjustments to his driving style helped him better adapt to the car’s characteristics, contributing to his improved performance at Monza. Looking ahead, McLaren expects to perform better on circuits featuring long corners, such as Malaysia, Austin, and Brazil, while acknowledging that tracks like Baku and Madrid may not suit their car as well.
Stella also highlighted the team’s realistic outlook on the championship, focusing on taking each race as it comes rather than making broad predictions. The approach at Monza reflected this mindset, balancing competitive racing with strategic considerations based on the drivers’ equal footing.
