Andrea Stella, McLaren’s Team Principal, expressed cautious optimism about the team’s chances of securing a podium finish at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, despite some setbacks during qualifying. The session saw McLaren’s drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris face challenges that affected their starting positions, but Stella believes the race could still offer opportunities.
McLaren entered Monza following strong performances, having won the previous two races at the Hungaroring and Zandvoort. In qualifying, Oscar Piastri initially secured third place but was handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Liam Lawson, which dropped him to sixth on the starting grid. Lando Norris qualified eighth, with brake issues impacting his pace. Both drivers showed promising speed in Q2, finishing second and third respectively before the final session.
Stella noted that the qualifying results did not fully reflect the car’s potential, pointing to execution errors such as Piastri’s impeding incident and battery management challenges. The McLaren MCL40 package, while having some shortcomings, still demonstrated promise for a strong race at Monza, a circuit where straight-line speed plays a significant role.
According to Stella, the key to a successful race lies in smart driving, effective energy management, and strategic decisions. He highlighted that factors which influenced qualifying, such as slipstream positioning and brake management, might be less critical during the race itself. The unpredictable nature of Monza’s race was also underlined, especially the balance between using boost to overtake and the risk of losing time if overtaken in return.
While Piastri and Norris face the challenge of starting from sixth and eighth on the grid respectively, Stella’s assessment suggests that McLaren’s pace and race strategy could still place them in contention for a podium. The team’s recent form and the characteristics of the Monza circuit offer a platform for potential recovery despite the qualifying setbacks.
This evaluation reflects the situation following the qualifying session, emphasizing the variables that will influence the race outcome. McLaren’s focus remains on maximizing the car’s strengths and managing the race intelligently to capitalize on opportunities as they arise.
