Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula 1® world champion currently racing for Aston Martin Racing, has expressed uncertainty about his plans once he eventually retires from the sport. Despite a long and successful career spanning over 26 years, Alonso admits he has “no idea” what his next steps will be beyond Formula 1®.

Alonso has indicated that he intends to make a decision regarding his future in Formula 1® around the summer break of the 2026 season. However, he has dismissed suggestions that Aston Martin’s upcoming upgrade package for the Hungarian Grand Prix will influence this choice. The team’s technical developments, while important, are not the determining factor in his retirement considerations.

Looking beyond the Formula 1® paddock, Alonso has shared that he is open to staying involved in motorsport in various capacities. This could include endurance racing, the Dakar Rally, or taking on a non-driving role within Aston Martin. His extensive experience and past successes outside Formula 1®—including winning the World Endurance Championship in 2018-19, two victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and a win at the Daytona 24 Hours—highlight his versatility and passion for racing in different disciplines.

Alonso also mentioned a personal ambition to walk the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, though he plans to wait until his newborn son is older before undertaking this journey. This reflects a desire for balance and new experiences outside the intense environment of Formula 1®.

From Aston Martin’s perspective, the team is keen to retain Alonso for the 2027 season. Team boss Adrian Newey has expressed hope that the car’s upgrades will encourage Alonso to continue racing with them. Should Alonso decide to retire, it would open a seat alongside Lance Stroll at Aston Martin, marking a significant change in the driver lineup.

At this stage, no definitive timeline for Alonso’s retirement has been confirmed, and the specifics of his future roles remain uncertain. His statements underline a thoughtful approach to the next chapter of his career, balancing his ongoing commitment to racing with openness to new challenges within and beyond motorsport.

Alonso’s reflections provide insight into the mindset of a seasoned driver considering life after Formula 1®, highlighting both his enduring passion for racing and the personal priorities shaping his decisions.
