Fernando Alonso reported a notably improved driving experience with Aston Martin’s upgraded AMR26 during the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. After the team introduced a significant update package, Alonso described the car as “much better,” highlighting enhanced stability and predictability.
The upgrade involved 16 changes to the AMR26, marking a major step for Aston Martin after a challenging start to the season. Team Principal and designer Adrian Newey set a clear objective of regaining respectability in the championship, with the upgrade aimed at addressing some of the car’s earlier shortcomings.
During Friday’s practice sessions at the Hungaroring, Alonso finished 13th in the first session and 19th in the second, although his best lap time was invalidated due to a track limits violation. Meanwhile, teammate Lance Stroll was unable to participate in both sessions because of a suspension issue. Alonso’s feedback emphasized that the upgraded car felt more glued to the ground, easier to drive, and offered better grip control through corners, making it more predictable overall.
Alonso noted that the upgrade’s effects aligned well with the team’s expectations and expressed optimism about unlocking further potential in qualifying sessions and upcoming races. He also pointed out that improvements are still needed on both the chassis and engine fronts. The next race at Zandvoort was mentioned as a valuable opportunity to test the new engine update.
