Fernando Alonso is set to return to the Dakar Rally in 2027, this time competing with Aston Martin in a rally-raid car prepared by Prodrive. The Spanish driver, who previously took part in the 2020 Dakar Rally with Toyota, will pilot an Aston Martin-branded vehicle based on the Dacia Sandrider platform, which recently secured victory with Nasser Al-Attiyah.

The project, agreed upon in August 2026 but only recently revealed, involves a car that may carry the Aston Martin Dreadnought name, inspired by a virtual concept from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 game. Prodrive is responsible for the car’s preparation and team management, continuing its established presence in rally-raid events. Alonso is expected to be co-driven by Marc Coma, a five-time Dakar motorcycle winner, adding significant experience to the pairing.

The 2027 Dakar Rally is scheduled to take place from January 1 to 15, primarily in Saudi Arabia, although geopolitical uncertainties have prompted consideration of Morocco as a potential alternative host. Alongside Alonso and Coma, Prodrive is reportedly planning a full Dakar team, which might include notable names such as Nasser Al-Attiyah and Sébastien Loeb, though no official confirmation has been made regarding the complete lineup.

Alonso’s return to the Dakar Rally reflects his ongoing passion for diverse motorsport challenges. Having already competed in prestigious events like the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the two-time Formula 1® World Champion aims to test himself in one of motorsport’s toughest endurance competitions while maintaining his contract with Aston Martin in Formula 1® for the 2027 season.

The Aston Martin Dreadnought rally-raid car will build on the success of the Dacia Sandrider, which has proven its capability in recent Dakar events. While detailed specifications and design elements remain limited, the involvement of Prodrive ensures a professional and competitive approach to the rally. Alonso’s experience from his 2020 Dakar campaign, where he finished 13th, will be valuable as he adapts to the unique demands of the event.

This venture marks a notable expansion of Aston Martin’s motorsport activities beyond Formula 1®, highlighting the brand’s interest in rally-raid disciplines. Alonso’s role bridges both worlds, combining his Formula 1® commitments with a high-profile entry into the Dakar Rally. The collaboration with Prodrive and the potential inclusion of other top rally drivers underline the seriousness of the project.

As preparations continue through late 2026, attention will remain on how the team develops the car and organizes its driver lineup. The final decision on the rally’s location will also be closely watched, given the geopolitical factors affecting the traditional Saudi Arabian route. Alonso’s participation in the Dakar Rally with Aston Martin adds an intriguing chapter to his versatile motorsport career.
