Despite not having one of the fastest cars on the grid, Alonso’s approach allowed him to capitalize on the race dynamics and bring home a solid result for the team.
The Aston Martin AMR26 showed signs of progress at Zandvoort, benefiting from aerodynamic upgrades and the introduction of a new Honda power unit. Alonso faced challenges early in the weekend, starting from the pit lane in the Sprint race due to setup changes and qualifying 18th for the main event. However, the team’s strategic call to run a long one-stop race on hard tyres proved decisive.
Alonso’s final stint lasted 37 laps on hard tyres, a feat no other driver managed during the race. Originally planned as a two-stop strategy, the team adapted to traffic conditions and the car’s characteristics, which favored corner speed over straight-line pace. This approach enabled Alonso to gain positions as other drivers made their pit stops.
Despite the improvements, the AMR26 still faces challenges with straight-line speed and engine drivability, including issues with downshifting and engine braking. Alonso acknowledged progress in chassis optimization but expressed uncertainty about further power unit gains, noting that performance improvements can be circuit-dependent. Meanwhile, teammate Lance Stroll retired from the race due to damage and handling problems.
Aston Martin’s Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack emphasized that the team is still learning from the new aerodynamic package and power unit integration, expecting continued development in upcoming events. Alonso’s adaptability and the team’s strategic flexibility contributed to a noteworthy points finish, marking his third points-scoring result of the 2026 season.
