This unexpected outcome is largely due to changes in the hybrid power unit regulations. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri highlighted that nearly half of the power in the 2026 cars will come from electrical energy, but the FIA has imposed a strict limit on energy harvesting, capping it at 5 megajoules per lap. This reduction aims to curb excessive lift-and-coast driving and super clipping, techniques that previously helped boost top speeds but were seen as detracting from racing quality.

Monza’s layout, characterized by its long straights and few corners, presents a unique challenge under these new rules. The cars rapidly deplete their stored electrical energy on the straights, while opportunities to recharge the battery are limited due to the circuit’s flow. Piastri explained that increasing energy harvesting would lead to more super clipping, which paradoxically reduces speed at the end of the straights. Conversely, the current harvesting limit means less electrical energy is available, capping the peak speeds achievable at Monza.

These energy management constraints create a scenario where racing at Monza could feature more "yo-yo" style battles, with overtaking opportunities heavily influenced by battery charge levels rather than solely driver skill or car performance. This contrasts with the Hungaroring, where the more technical nature of the circuit allows for different energy deployment strategies and less reliance on peak straight-line speed.

Formula 1® CEO Stefano Domenicali has acknowledged some criticism of super clipping but maintains that overtaking—regardless of style—is what fans want to see. Piastri anticipates that the energy-starved conditions at Monza will lead to chaotic and strategic racing, as drivers and teams carefully manage their limited electrical energy to gain an advantage.
